David was a good man, a committed Christian, and a good father to his children. Handicapped by the cerebrospinal meningitis he contracted as a baby, he had to make an extra effort to do some things other people do without thinking about it. He did not walk until he was four. The illness left him without balance so that he couldn't ride a bike or climb ladders. Otherwise, he was completely healthy. He never surrendered to any of these weaknesses and worked until retirement age, even using a wheelchair to get to work and back in middle age, sometimes taking the train to Boston. David was a role model for others who have had to work their way through setbacks. He even counseled some youths who had to deal with these issues. He loved fishing and boating and was a popular leader of his Flotilla in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He had a wry sense of humor and enjoyed socializing with everyone. David had many cousins on his mother's side of the family with whom he grew up, and was Uncle Dave to his brother's seven children, whom he saw often when they were younger. His favorite pets were dogs, of which he had many over his lifetime. He often told stories about their adventures.
Though it was hard for some family members to see him in the later years because of distance, he was always loved. I am sure that the Lord and his family in heaven have welcomed him, rejoicing that he is finally home and free from the burdens he faced in life. God bless you, Dave, and thank you for all you have given - and forgiven - me.
