Obituary of David A Brown

David A. Brown Jr., 78, of Burlington, formerly of Sudbury and Salem, died July 3 in the Lahey Clinic in Burlington after a short illness. He had been a resident of Sunrise Senior Living in Burlington for the past three years. Born in Lexington, Mass., David was a son of the late David A. and Helen (Berry) Brown Sr. of Burlington, Mass., and later of Dresden, Maine. He was preceded in death by his wife, Penny (Walker) Brown of Sudbury and a brother, Neil Berry Sr. of Anchorage, Alaska. Mr. Brown worked for 34 years for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as an employment counselor in Gloucester and Salem. He served as commander of Flotilla 402 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Salem, Mass., and was named Outstanding Auxiliarist and Mr. Coast Guard Auxiliary 1975 by Division IV of the organization. He was also was a Boy Scout leader in Salem and a member of the Lafayette St. Methodist Church. Mr. Brown was an avid fisherman who loved to fish the shores of Rockport and go deep sea fishing for striped bass off the coast of Gloucester. As a boy, he spent much of the summer in Dresden, Maine, fishing the bog near his parents’ cabin. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Gordon College in Wenham in 1964 and held a certificate from Essex Agricultural College in Middleton, Mass. He also studied theology at Boston University School of Theology and served as assistant pastor at Lafayette Street Methodist Church in Salem in the late 1960s. Mr. Brown is survived by a son, David C. Brown of Ipswich, Mass.; a daughter, Jeanne Hudak of Reading, Pa.; a step-son, John Karash of Sudbury; three grandchildren, Michelle and Jessica Hudak of Reading, Pa. and Lilith Brown of Ipswich, Mass; three nephews, Neil Berry Jr. of Gloucester, Mass.; David Berry of Butner, N.C.; and Kirk Berry of Palmer, Alaska; and four nieces, Deborah Del Pozzo of Wasilla, Alaska; Doreen Morris of North Pole, Alaska; Tonia Varin of Anchorage, Alaska; and Helen Holt, also of Wasilla. Memorial Services will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington (Exit 34 off Rt.128/95 Woburn Side) on Sunday, July 9 at 1:00 PM. Interment will be private.
