Obituary of Frederick Born

Frederick C. Born, a retired employee at Waltham Services and driver for Meals on Wheels, passed away after a long struggle with cancer on Friday afternoon, March 23, 2012. He was 79 years old. Fred was born in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Frederick and Helen Born. He grew up and was educated in Royal Oak, Michigan. In high school, he played basketball and excelled in track and field. From 1951 to 1955, he was a Seaman in the Navy. He served on the USS Caloosahatchee, which was a fuel tanker and refueling ship for the US Fleet’s East Coast. For Fred, the best outcome of his service was that he met his future wife, Anna Russo, while stationed in Boston. Fred was a huge sports fan. His first date with Anna was a Bruins game in 1952. They were married in April of 1954. He finished his tour of duty, and then the newlyweds settled in Detroit and Pontiac, Michigan. There Fred worked as a auto mechanic at his family’s gas station. In 1969, he and his family settled in Burlington, MA where they raised their 3 sons. Fred worked for 20 years as an Exterminator for Waltham Services. After he retired, he spent 8 years as a driver for the Meals on Wheels program in Burlington. Fred was a passionate individual. He was a huge Boston sports fan. It was a real treat to watch a game with Fred, because he would get so enthralled in the game that he would blare at the television and spin around in his chair. He followed politics and had strong and definite opinions on how our country should be governed. He and his family have been active members of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer ever since they moved to Burlington. He loved camping at Mayo Farms in Meredith, NH with his family. He enjoyed boating on Lake Waukewan. His family had many friends at the camp ground and fond memories of their time spent there. Fred will be remembered for his strong convictions and commitment to his family and church. Fred was the beloved husband of Anna M. (Russo). He was the loving father of David & his wife Karen of Lynn, William of Reading & his girlfriend Denise Castonguay of Laconia, NH, and Michael & his wife Jeanne of Billerica. He is survived by a brother, Robert of FL. He was the proud grandfather of Matthew of S. Boston, Barbara of Plum Island, and Billy of Newton. Funeral services will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 60 Forest Park Rd, Woburn, on Tuesday, March 27 at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will follow the service. Interment will take place at the MA National Veteran’s Cemetery, Connery Ave, Bourne on Tuesday at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Fred’s name may be made to the Minuteman Senior Services, Meals on Wheels Program, 24 3rd Ave, Burlington, MA 01803.
