Daniel Martin Avila, a resident of Burlington since 1966, passed away at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House on Tuesday morning, January 2, 2018. He was 81 years old. Dan was born and raised in Somerville. He was a 1955 graduate of Somerville High School. Dan loved baseball and was on the Somerville High School Baseball team. He played third base. One of Dan’s favorite memories at Somerville High School was winning the State Championship in 1954. Dan was scouted by the Red Sox but did not make the team. As Dan would say in later years “It was there loss”. He continued to be a fan of baseball by changed his allegiance to the New York Yankees! After High School Dan served his country in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. He achieved the rank of SP-3 (T). Dan worked at Arrow Electronics for over 20 years. He loved his job there and made many friendships. Dan could rattle off facts about Baseball History and American History. He especially enjoyed studying the Civil War Era. He played on the Burlington Low-Impact Softball league until the age of 75. Dan was also a member of the Brookline Lodge of Elks. Dan had a wonderful close relationship with his brother Joseph. They did everything together including a memorable trip across country. In recent years he had a special relationship with his niece Christine. She brought much happiness into his life. Christine lovingly took care of Dan these past few years as his health began to decline. Although the time Christine had with Dan was very short, she was very blessed to have had him in her life after a lengthy separation. She will miss him terribly. Dan was the beloved son of the late Jerry and Thelma. Loving brother of the late Joseph and Anthony. Very much loved uncle of Christine F. Avila.
