Obituary of George Herald

George W. Herald, a resident of Burlington since 1966, passed away at the Winchester Hospital on Thursday evening, April 7, 2011. The husband of Dorothy (Lee) he was 71 years old. George was born in Cambridge. He was raised and educated in Watertown. George was a Veteran of the Vietnam War serving his country in the United States Navy where he was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. George worked his entire career at M.I.T. where he was a Heat & Ventilation Mechanic. George loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting trips with his brother Paul in New Hampshire. He would fish at Horn Pond in Woburn. He always looked forward to his yearly “rendezvous” in Northfield with his longtime friends. He was a member of the Woburn Sportsmen’s Association and the Woburn Mason’s. George was an important part of the “Family at Sammy’s Deli” for over 40 years. Before his retirement he would go to Sammy’s during the weekend days early in the morning between 4 – 5 a.m. He would start the coffee, make the egg sandwiches and get things ready for the store to be open. After his retirement George would make this his daily routine Monday through Friday. George loved his family. He was a devoted father and husband. He never missed a weekend visiting his daughter Laurie. George and his family enjoyed talking trips to Mt. Washington and North Conway. They enjoyed attending the July 4th Parade in Burlington. George loved to spend time his with three grandchildren John, Gina and Crystal. George will be remembered as a kind and generous man who was always looking to give of himself to others. Beloved was the husband of Dorothy (Lee). He was the loving father of Laurie L. of Burlington and Linda L. Gargone & her husband Steven of Athol. Brother of Paul of Nottingham, NH. Grandfather of John, Gina & Crystal Gargone. Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Monday, April 11 from 4 – 7:30 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials in George’s name may be made to Friends of Hathorne, Hogan Regional Center, C/O Rosemary Bevins, 2HC, 450 Maple St., Danvers, MA 01923
