I had the privilege of being a neighbor of Ginny’s when we were growing up in Burlington. To me, Ginny was just one of the many kids who lived on the block, who happened to enjoy walks with her mother. Who wouldn’t? The Rita we knew was always laughing and smiling, seemingly always able to find the good in any situation. Whenever my mother noticed them walking down the sidewalk toward our house, she would scurry to meet them and of course bring the four of us with her. Ginny always seemed to have fun when she was allowed to come play at our house, and super excited when we would go play at her house. Joe and Rita were always warm and welcoming. Early on I was aware of my parents’ admiration and respect for Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, but it wasn’t until I was older that I understood the many reasons why. Some of it had to do with the many ways they had helped my parents juggle four young children (from offering words of wisdom, to catching toddlers who had run out the house and down the street), but a lot of it had to do with how Joe and Rita raised their children and how they all advocated for Ginny. I have thought of the Hayes family many times over the years, always with fondness and a smile. I am so sorry for your loss, and send you my love and condolences.
