Nancy Hughes

Obituary of Nancy A Hughes

Nancy A. Hughes, a longtime resident of Burlington, passed away at the Life Care Center of Merrimack Valley on Sunday evening, April 26, 2020.  She was 91years old.

Nancy was born in Newton.  She was the daughter of Thornton and Mildred Burgess.  She was raised and educated in Cambridge and a graduate of Cambridge High and Latin.  Nancy’s grandfather was the famous author and wildlife conservationist ThorntonW. Burgess who wrote many children’s books including Peter Rabbit. She met and married her husband George in Cambridge and they then moved to the small community of Burlington in the early 1960’s.  Nancy worked at John Hancock before her marriage to George, but her primary role in life was that of wife and mother.  Nancy was known to make a “great cup of coffee”. She herself would say that cooking was not her favorite thing to do, but she was known for making her spaghetti and meatball dinners every Sunday.  As a family, they enjoyed family vacations on Cape Cod.

Nancy loved nature and animals.  She was always rescuing a “stray” dog or cat and welcoming them into her home.  She was a member of the Cats Meow Club. She enjoyed drawing and painting.  Nancy had great love for her family and was lucky to see all her great grandchildren born and to be a part of their lives. She will be remembered for her silly sense of humor, her giggles and most of all her dedication and love to her many friends, nieces and nephews. Fondly remembered by Jesse Bradley and Crystal Lemere. She will be dearly missed by her dear childhood friend Jean Bastos, of Burlington.

Nancy is the beloved wife of the late George D. Hughes.  Loving mother of Debra Hanna & her husband Rich of Fort Myers, FL, Mark Hughes & his late wife Avis of Derry, NH, Jean Parrish & her companion Paul Vozzella of Burlington, Alison Edmondson & her husband Jeff of Lowell.  Proud grandmother of Nicole Bradley, James Sproul V, Chris Hughes and Travis Vozzella.   Great- grandmother of Tyler, Nate, Brody, Keira and Vivienne. Sister of the late Thornton W. Burgess, IV and the late David Arthur Burgess.  Funeral Services will be private.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Nancy’s name may be made to Burlington Animal Clinic, 259 A Cambridge St. Burlington, MA. 01803 burlingtonanimalclinic.com or Animal Rescue League of Boston, 10 Chandler St., Boston, MA 02115 www.arlboston.org
