Obituary of Catherine Mary Fitzgerald
A Mass of Christian Burial willb be held at St. Margaret's Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington on Friday, June 19 at 10 a.m. Burial to follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Relatives & friends resepctfully invited to attend. Due to the current regulations in place the capacity at St.Margaret's is 80 people.
Catherine Mary Fitzgerald (Kathleen), a retired Medical Technologist, passed away on Friday night, May 8,2020. She was 81 years old. Kathleen was born in Cambridge. She was the daughter of Irish immigrants, John and Mary Fitzgerald. She grew up in Somerville and was a graduate of St. Clement High School. She moved to Melrose in 1983. She started her career in the health field at the age of 20 at the Somerville Hospital in the Blood Lab. She was a quick study and loved the field. She eventually went to work at Melrose Wakefield Hospital and rose to the position of Chief Bacteriologist. She ended her career at Massachusetts General Hospital in their Microbiology Lab. She was a member of the American Society of Medical Technologists and attended many national conferences to learn the newest techniques, studies, and innovations in the field. She loved her career and the constant challenges it provided her.
Kathleen was devoted to her parents, her extended family, and her faith. She was proud of her Irish heritage and visited Ireland several times. She loved her Boston sports teams and was thrilled with all their championships these past 20 years. She especially loved skiing. Much to her delight one niece inherited her love of skiing. For 25 years, she owned a condo at Loon Mountain and was there as often as possible.
Kathleen was the beloved daughter of the late John and Mary Fitzgerald. She was the loving sister of John Fitzgerald and his wife Margaret of Tyngsborough, James Fitzgerald and his wife Diana of Burlington and the late Mary Theresa Fitzgerald. She was the devoted aunt of John, Michael, Kathleen, Brian, Michael, David Fitzgerald, Patricia Ungerson and Caitlin Skoglund. She is also survived by 9 great nieces and nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be held at a future date.
