To the entire Barkhouse family, my sincere condolences on Ernie's passing. I was incredibly fortunate to work with Ernie in the early to mid-1980s at IBM in the Boston / Burlington area. I was fresh out of electronics school and in my mid to late 20s when I got hired by IBM to work on large mainframe systems. It was a bit overwhelming at times, but Ernie was the senior tech support guy for our group and he really helped me become a better engineer. I was fortunate to get assigned to the AVCO account in Wilmington with Ernie and Chris Panagos and got the best hands-on training possible.
Ernie was a co-worker, technical resource, good friend and a combination big brother / father figure as he was about 20 years my senior. Whether we were talking about technology or life in general, he was sincere, funny and a pleasure to be around. Ernie was also the poster boy for cool, calm and collected. I was the only one onsite at AVCO one day when a critical piece of mainframe equipment failed and slowed down all the computer processing. I was trying to troubleshoot it, but every minute the operations manager was interrupting me to ask what the problem was and when it would be operational. After about 10 minutes Ernie walked into the room, and the ops manager looked at me and simply said "We're good - Ernie's here. Let me know when we can bring it back online." The manager left the room and never bothered us after that - all that mattered was that Ernie Barkhouse was here to save the day. All the customer personnel revered Ernie as he helped everyone.
I left IBM in the late 1980s and lost touch with Ernie, but always wondered how he was doing. Based on his obituary, he had an extraordinary life. Godspeed, my friend.
Regards,
Bob Nadeau

So many happy memories with this giant of a man. His quiet laugh, signature line “c’mon, Muttley,” 1st stop for all mechanical problems, and steady presence will be missed. He has meant so much to me and my family. We send out heartfelt condolences to all.

Our deepest sympathies to the Barkhouse family. I knew Ernie having worked with him at IBM. He was a true gentleman, hard working and most humble man. Meeting him at our Andover Chateau restaurant at our monthly IBM retiree luncheons and get togethers was a treat seeing him attend. He'll be greatly missed. Ernie was a true Patriot having served in the US Navy. I salute him. May God Bless his soul.
Sorrowfully,
Dick and Cecile

On behalf of the entire Brule/ Valliere family’s our deepest condolences to The entire Barkhouse Family. Ernie and his family are a staple on Webster lake. A great neighbor and friend. Ernie loved walking his dogs, first Ginger, then Sandy girl. We all loved Ernie, his conversations, and his quiet demeanor. He will be greatly missed here on Webster Ave. But we are all blessed to have known him. It was a great pleasure to call this friend and neighbor one of a kind. RIP ERNIE
