Obituary of George Paul Marren

George Paul Marren, a retired New England Telephone employee, passed away after a long illness on Thursday afternoon, September 23, 2021.  He was 85 years old.  Paul was born in Somerville.  He was one of three children born to the late Charles and Alice Marren.  He grew up in Somerville and was a graduate of Somerville High School.  He met his future wife, Beverly, when they were working at the Publix Market in Davis Square in Somerville when they were teenagers.  They dated for six years and married in 1957.  They settled in Burlington in 1961 where they raised their two sons. 

Paul spent 37 years working with New England Telephone.  He started his career as a lineman and worked his way up the ladder from construction foreman, construction manager, to District Manager.  He managed the Chelmsford and Braintree garages for many years.  Paul had a strong work ethic, understood all the aspects his job, and would never ask anything of his employees that he hadn’t done during his career.  He was well respected amongst his peers and has a great circle of friends from his connections with New England Telephone. 

Paul was a past member of the Knights of Columbus.  He was a huge Boston Sports fan, especially the Celtics.  He was an avid sailor.  He worked part time as a member of the crew of a sailing yacht located in Newburyport.  He sailed throughout the East Coast navigating all the coastal waters, doing relocation sails, and creating wonderful memories for those sailing aboard the vessel.  He enjoyed working around his yard and his pool.  His lawn was probably one of the finest lawns in Burlington.  He loved to entertain and had a wonderful group of neighbors and friends.  His annual 4^th of July pool party sometimes had over 100 guests.  His pool was also a favorite destination for his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was a doting husband to his wife Beverly for almost 60 years.  He was a strong role model to his sons.  He was firm, set expectations, supported them in their sports, education, and life decisions, and loved them unconditionally. In his eyes, his grand and great grandchildren could do no wrong.  His great grandchildren affectionally called him “Papa George”.  His past 12 years have been filled with many health challenges, but Paul was a fighter no matter what his health situation.  He will be remembered as a hardworking, fun-loving man who loved all his family with his entire being.

Paul was the beloved husband of the late Beverly Jane (Reddick) Marren. He was the loving father of Charles D. Marren & his wife Donna of Lowell and the late Paul J. Marren.  He was the proud grandfather of Kellie Rowland of Scituate, David Marren of Lowell, Brendan Marren of FL formerly of Osterville.  He was the great grandfather of Mollie, Alice & Josephine Rowland.  He was the brother of  Marsha E. Chicoine & her late husband Joseph of Melrose and the late David C. Marren & his surviving wife Sharon of Lowell.  

Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON on Tuesday, Sept 28 from 4-7 p.m.  Funeral from the Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 9 a.m.  Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy Church at St. Veronica Parish, www.stveronicama.org,  99 Bedford St., Burlington at 10 a.m.  Services will conclude with burial in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.  In lieu of flowers memorials in George’s name may be made to People Helping People, PO Box 343, Burlington, MA 01803 www.peoplehelpingpeopleinc.org
