So much already written about this great woman. More stories and laughs
will come today. We have wonderful memories of Thanksgiving dinners
with Gloria and our family and friends. She celebrated our independence
from the UK with delight and humor. The Christmas Eves with our house
overflowing. Every age group represented. 9:00 pm, time for the Poppers.
You mean the Crackers she would say. On her count of three we would
POP, wear the paper hats, tell the silly jokes and laugh. We will miss her!

Gloria and I came to these shores from England more than 40 years ago. We didn’t know each other when we initially lived in Manhattan but our paths soon crossed because of the nature of our work – Gloria in advertising and me in magazine publishing. In fact, I got to know her when she took over my office after I moved on to another job. Gloria was the life and soul of any party and we had many great times together while we were both in Manhattan. We kept in touch during the times our lives took us to different places – Gloria to California and New Jersey, me to Washington DC and Massachusetts.
When Gloria moved to Massachusetts permanently, we were able to see much more of each other and to resume our earlier friendship. We shared a lot of fun, memorable times over these past few years.
Gloria lived life to the fullest; she has left us far too soon but she bore this past year with a grace and fortitude I would not have thought possible. She was a kind, generous person and a wonderful ally to have in one’s corner.
Gloria, rest in peace, dear friend. I shall miss you terribly.

Gloria in business-to-business media was a force of nature to everyone who worked with or in my case as a sales person calling on her experienced. She blazed a trail that opened many doors for women in a male dominated industry. Yes she was tough…she had to be. That said the things I remember were her laugh and her up front honesty. What Bob Dumas and Karen Watkins would tell you and what I experienced is Gloria was beyond her tough business persona was an intelligent, funny, compassionate and caring person. I will miss not going to lunches at Strega Prime and her laugh.

My husband, Josh Powers, and I have known Gloria since she came to New York from the UK to start the Michael Jarvis office over 40 years ago. We met through the International Advertising Assn activities in New York. When she married her husband Bill Etra and moved to California we still kept in touch. After we moved permanently to Vermont in the 1990s, lo and behold, Gloria was in Massachusetts. Over the last 15 or so years, we have been lucky enough to have Gloria for visits about twice a year…in summer for the flowers and farmers markets and in December for Christmas activities. She always arrived bearing wine and cheese for eating and a big smile and laughs for our souls. She was well-known and loved by our family during visits and holidays. Gloria was always kind, helpful, cheerful, generous and a great lover of flowers. We pondered over choices of what to plant in the summer – too much sun, too little sun, too dry, too wet. That was the Gloria we knew over the last 20 or so years. She loved good food and wine.
Gloria was well-loved in the U.S. international advertising community as well as in the UK. As a group, the US IAA saw each other regularly at meetings and events. Gloria loved a good party. As Gloria was an international marketing manager for US clients, she was well-known to Sales Reps, such as myself, from international media from the UK, Japan, Europe, Middle East, Australia, to name a few, as well as international editions of Time, Newsweek , International Herald Tribune and many technical business publications. She was definitely our favorite client.
During Gloria’s time in Mass, what she did never changed, but who she did it for, did. Some years ago, she had a hip replaced and at another time went into a coma unexpectedly. Her friends always supported her. From our conversations in recent years, especially during her illness, Gloria loved and felt supported by her community in Burlington. When she told me of the weekly flower arranging classes, I was supremely jealous. But that wasn’t the extent of their involvement; they took great care of her during her final illness making sure she made her appointments and being with her to the end.
I know she very much appreciated the care and attention lavished by her Burlington friends. Thank you for being by her side for her last journey.
On behalf of the many individuals in the international community, whose lives she touched and whom I and my colleagues have talked to, Gloria, you were well-loved and you will be missed.

I met Gloria through her friend Eileen, another "Brit", and had a couple of fun Christmas celebrations with her. She loved to laugh and had a great laugh❤ She always brought a Christmas pudding and the delicious clotted cream - which I would've eaten by the spoonful had Gloria not kept close watch on it! She was a bright light and I'm sure she will be shining in the cosmos forever.

Gloria Langham:
In Loving, Heartbroken Tribute
1948 - 2021
I am in deep mourning for the death of beloved friend Gloria at the way-too-soon age of 73. Lucky to remain close since meeting Gloria at work & at play in 1999, I am beyond words heartbroken that she has had to return her borrowed stardust to the cosmos.
She would not want me to share her many best qualities or monstrous fifteen-month war with esophageal cancer — though she never whined, or complained: simply told what was happening clearly & honestly — then bravely drank her liquid protein extra cold — very Gloria, despite losing so much of what she valued — mobility, travel, feasts, visiting family & friends worldwide.
Instead, will share that her fave colors are Red & Orange, she loved flowers, discoveries, her delightful best-purr-ever kitty ‘Tigger’ & many chosen humans — & remember that she has remained a unique treasure in my life these oft-troubled & oft-joyous years throughout this Millennium. Over time, knowing her last year of brutal challenges is ended perhaps may be solace — yet she loved this life so, no matter what. And I loved our many shared times together, comparing stories & laughing often.
Walt Whitman may be right. Hope so:
“All goes onward and outward,
nothing collapses;
And to die is different from what
any one supposes,
and luckier.” (“Leaves of Grass” excerpt.)
Yet those of us left to spin forward without Gloria in our lives will always feel the unspeakable loss of so great a spirit & superb ambassador for the human race.

I met Gloria in 1996 during a European sales trip. Her honesty, candor, salty language and fearless demeanor made us fast friends. We spent an awful lot of time together over the last 25 years discussing media for all of her accounts, particularly her biggest account-Analog Devices.
She was a media maven, a friend, a confidante and a mentor. When I heard she was ill, I called her and kept calling her every 3-4 weeks just to check in on her. I just spoke to her last month. She told me that things were looking up and that the doctors were confident in a speedy "recovery" so I was shocked when I heard she had died.
God bless her
Bob Dumas
