Growing up in Burlington just a rock throw away from the MacDonald family’s house, brings me back to so many fond memories. Whether it was watching H build huge bike jumps in their back yard and launching himself a mile high, knowing he was going to crash, or collecting turtles with S and building a turtle race track hoping your guy would win, or playing a neighborhood game of hide and seek and Karen and I hiding in her house getting snacks from her mom. The entire time Mr. MacDonald sitting in his recliner telling all of us to stay out of trouble, at least for that day. You could only hope for neighbors as fun and inviting as the MacDonald gang. My deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Mr. MacDonald. He was a special kind of Dad and always welcoming to all us mischievous kids.

When this rookie Patrolman came on the job Hugh was my street Sargent for my first 2 shifts.Hugh would stop by during my walking beat nights and let me sit in the cruiser to catch a little break on those very cold nights. To a rookie that’s a big deal and his calming demeanor and quick humor certainly made me feel at ease.He told me education was the key to good Police work and always tell the truth when you go to court and the job will take care of itself.Hugh was a humble man but not shy to point out a mistake you might have made but had compassion to make the situation right. He left a wonderful family behind to carry on all the MacDonald traditions in his memory…….Peter L McGann

My Uncle Hugh, My distinguished uncle and always our family hero. I was not aware of the love I had of the law until
you introduced me to the MCLE. My uncle stood tall among men. He was always the family favorite, he had a wonderful sense of humor and wisdom beyond his years. I will carry him in my heart always. With much love, your niece Jeanne

Let me start by saying Hugh Sr. was a Great story teller. And he always loved a good cup of coffee to go along with some engaging conversation. His vocabulary was legendary and added vivid color to his all of his tales. He would also often embed strong moral themes throughout as well as bits of extremely useful advice for those that were listening. He was an extremely Honorable man and an outstanding role model, husband, father, and Papa. He certainly had a positive and influential impact on my life growing up and through the years. He will be Deeply missed, but I will hear his voice when I need it for the rest of my life. My deepest sympathy to Audrey, H, Karen, Scott, Debbie, and all of the grandchildren.

HD and I spent many nights walking up and down Moody Street on Routes 4 and 5. He took a young rookie under his wing and gave me memories and advice that I have taken all through my career and life. Rest well brother.
