Obituary of John Joseph Conway

John J. Conway of Burlington MA died peacefully on April 2 after a brief illness surrounded by the love of his 3 sons. He was 84. John was always kind and enjoyed making people laugh. He led a life of service and dedication to his family. He was gifted with the Irish DNA of wit and a wicked sense of humor.

While in high school John met the love of his life and best friend, Peggy Meehan. They were married in 1964 and enjoyed celebrating 50 years together, devoted to raising their sons, enjoying Cold Storage Beach on Cape Cod and traveling together to warm places. John was a graduate of Merrimack College and professionally thrived as a high school social studies teacher, assistant principal and director of the adult education program for 38 years in the Somerville School System. He served in the Army Reserves. Later he went on to organize the Middlesex Hockey League managing the logistics for 168 youth hockey teams and over 1700 players. As his sons liked to say, “He always seemed to have at least 3 jobs.” Recently he participated in the Retired Men’s Club of Arlington and enjoyed bowling and cribbage. John was always active and gregarious and eager to participate in fun activities that brought groupings of friends together. He enjoyed current events, politics and foreign affairs and was often enrolled in courses covering these subjects.

John cherished time with family and friends. The annual Christmas Eve party at the Conways was a memorable event for many Burlington families. John happily drove many miles to watch and cheer for the athletic events of his two adored granddaughters.

John was the husband of the late Margaret (Peggy Meehan) Conway, beloved father to Brian Conway and wife Rose of Sturbridge MA, Craig Conway of Burlington MA and Shaun Conway of So. Dennis MA, beloved grandfather to Allyson and Melanie Conway, brother to Francis Conway and wife Camilla of Jackson, NJ and dear brother in law to Deborah Meehan and her husband Perry Gates of Camden ME and Robert and wife Susan Meehan of Boxford MA.

A memorial visitation for John will take place on Monday, April 10 from 4 to 7 PM at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington, MA.. A Funeral Mass for John will be held at St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn Street, Burlington, MA on Tuesday, April 11 at 10:00 AM. Services will conclude with an internment at Pine Haven Cemetery, 84 Bedford Street Burlington, MA.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations in John’s name may be made to Cor Unum Meal Center, 118 South Broadway, Lawrence, MA 01843 where John enjoyed volunteering his time.
