Obituary of Thomas Scott

Thomas Victor Scott, retired Cambridge Fire Chief, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday afternoon, March 11, 2014. The beloved husband of 68 years of Mary E. (Chipman) Scott, he was 88 years old. Tom was born and raised in Cambridge. He was the son of Irish immigrants, the late Albert and Catherine Scott. Tom attended Rindge High School where he played baseball and basketball. During his junior year in high school, at the age of 17, Tom decided to enlist in the United States Navy Air Corp. He was a Veteran of World War II fighting battles in North Africa and Europe. Tom was the recipient of the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He returned home rekindling his love for his high school sweetheart, Mary E. Chipman, with whom he married and raised a family for the next year 68 years. Tom’s second love, beyond family, was he dedicated work with the Cambridge Fire Department. He served forty years with the Cambridge Fire Department from 1951 – 1991. Tom was the Cambridge Fire Chief from 1981 – 1991. He worked untiring to make sure his men were well equipped and prepared for any situation that they encountered on an emergency call. He loved the fire service and the brave and dedicated men and woman who served. Tom and Mary raised their family in Cambridge and had resided in Burlington for the last ten years. They enjoyed spending their retirement years in Osterville on Cape Cod. He was a handy person and enjoyed working around the house. Like many fire fighters, to better provide for his family, he also worked as a wallpaper and painter. He served his country, community, and family with pride , dignity, and love. Tom was the devoted husband of 68 years of Mary E. (Chipman) Scott. He was the loving and proud father of Thomas A. Scott & his wife Carol of Lexington, Robert Scott & his wife Patricia of Arlington and Kathryn Giacoppo & her husband Stephen of Burlington. He was the brother of Dorothy Hayes of FL and the late Irene Whitlock. He was the beloved “Gramps” to Thomas, Kathryn, Christopher, Kristina and Nicole and “Great Gramps” to Jack, Colin, Alec, Sadie & Will. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Saturday, March 15 at 9 a.m. Followed by Funeral Services at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 10 St. Mark’s Road, Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Friday 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Memorials in Tom’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 0170
