Obituary of Theodore Rose
Theodore R. “Ted” Rose, Jr. a teacher, coach, athletic director, and business owner passed away after an extended illness on Tuesday night, April 8, 2014. He was 74 years old.
Ted was born and raised in Medford, he was the son of the late Theodore & Anne Rose. Ted was destined to spend his life around sports. His mother was a talented runner, training with 1932 Olympian Mary Carew and his father was a Gold Glove Boxer as well as both parents being involved in Judo and running the Ted Rose Club. He graduated from Medford High School where he played football, baseball, basketball, and boxed. He then went to the University of Maine and was a member of their first Hall of Fame Football team and taught boxing. He would later go on to earn his Master’s at University of Massachusetts, Boston in Education Administration. Ted had a very successful career as a teacher, athletic director and coach and specialized in establishing athletics and developing winning programs. His resume was extensive including; teaching at Sudbury High School, Rhode Island College, Burlington High School, and Xaverian High School. He was a football coach at St. Clement’s High School, Burlington High, Xaverian High School, Brown University, Harvard University, M.I.T. and Tufts University. He was the athletic director and head football coach at Minuteman Vocational High School, Ransom-Everglades High School, Chaminade High School, and Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, FL. In all of these school’s Ted’s focus was on his students and athletes, giving them the tools and confidence to succeed in school, on the field, and in life. He stressed the importance of a college education and spent an exceptional amount of time helping athletes achieve their goals. He took several breaks from coaching where he established his own sports store called “The Running Racquet” which was located in Winchester. He also worked as a scout for the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins. If that was not enough, he played for the Red Sox Farm team, was a judge for the MA Boxing Association, ran 3 marathons, played tennis, and golfed.
Ted was also a family man. He was a loving husband to his wife Joyce for 53 years. They traveled, relocated, and raised their family together. He sometimes had dual roles as father, grandfather and coach. He was a caring, encouraging, and supportive father to his 6 children, and was a fun grandfather to his 18 grandchildren. Much like his coaching style he taught his family the important values of hard work, following your dreams, fair play, sportsmanship, giving to others, and family.
Ted was the husband of Joyce (Phillips) Rose. He was the loving father of Anne Newton & her husband Tom of Hollis, NH, Kathy Terenzoni & her husband Mark of Hollis, NH, Theodore Rose, III & his wife Inna of Acworth, GA, Marybeth Nepywoda & her husband Michael of Orlando, FL, Matt Rose & his wife Katherine of Winchester, and Jeanne Rose of Kingfield, ME. He was the son of the late Theodore Rose and Anne Rose, who lived to over a 100 years old and also passed away this past week. He was the brother of Marilyn Cox of Wilmington and Dorothy Hague of Tewksbury. “Grampy” to Nicole, Ryan, Tyler, Mikayla & Dylan Terenzoni, Whitney & Charley Loeb and Hogan Rose, Tommy, Amanda, Nathan & Rachel Newton, Russ, Ariana & Vlada Rose, Michael & Matthew Nepywoda, and Celia Rose. Also survived by 18 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128/95, Woburn side) on Monday, April 14 at 10:15 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 11:30 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday from 3-6 p.m. Interment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery, Bridgton, ME at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ted’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
