Obituary of Nancy Raskind
Nancy E. (Maizner) Raskind, an Educator who devoted her life to helping others in the field of reading, passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center on Monday morning, May 4, 2015. The beloved wife of Robert C. Raskind, she was 67 years old.
Nancy was born in New York. She was raised and educated in White Plains, New York. Nancy was a 1965 graduate of White Plains High School. During her Senior Year in High School she would meet her future husband Rob. She earned her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, her M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Boston University and her certification in Orton Gillingham from the Massachusetts General Hospital Language Clinic.
Nancy and Rob were married and they traveled throughout the world during their marriage. Before setting down to raise their family they lived in Africa for two years. Nancy had a long and successful career as a Teacher and an Educator. Her goal was that every child should have the opportunity to read and read well. That was her mission in her life. She worked as a classroom teacher in public schools for five years and after receiving her O.G. Certification at The Carroll School, a school for learning disabled children, for twenty one years where she taught reading, language arts, and social studies at both the elementary and middle school levels. She served as a consultant to two school districts in MA and RI where she demonstrated teaching with special education students, teacher observation and coaching. In addition, Nancy has taught graduate courses in education at Simmons College. In addition, she taught a course in Project Read Comprehension for students in the Reading Specialist Licensure program at The Reading Institute. Nancy was a national trainer for Project Read. She was a past member of the Board of Directors of the New England Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.
Nancy loved being outdoors whether it was skiing, bicycling, kayaking or running. She was a patron of the arts and enjoyed going to the movies and museums. With all her interests and activities Nancy’s greatest love was that of her family. She loved to host the holiday’s especially Thanksgiving and Passover and would open her home to her nieces and nephews. Nancy was very proud of her two sons and their accomplishments. She shared many wonderful years with her husband Rob. They shared so many mutual interests and were totally devoted to each other. One of the things that got Nancy through her long illness with the birth of her granddaughter of Aliyah. Aliyah’s visits brought Nancy so much joy. Nancy will be remembered as a woman who made a difference is so many lives through her passion for education. She was a loving wife, mother, nana and sister.
Nancy was the beloved wife of Robert C. She was mother of Matthew & his partner Lindsey Galinis of Atlanta, GA and Brent & his wife Jennifer of Melrose. Sister of Helen Bernstein of New York, NY and Andrew Maizner of Salt Lake City, UT. Loving Nana of Aliyah. Aunt of Steven & Valerie Bernstein, Rose Maizner and Peter, Lily &Daniel Raskind. Funeral Services were private.
