I remember meeting DJ & TC and Kate when I was about 8 years old. I would sometimes ride in my brother Wee’s car around town and one Saturday we pulled into the McNutt’s driveway. Wee, later to have the radio call name Swill Dog, and also my bother Slave Dog, would drive dump trucks with Donnie and the boys. I marveled at how they all could drive those big trucks backwards down the narrow driveway and park them neatly in the back yard. The first time I remember seeing that, DJ held my hand as we stood safely at the entrance to the garage.
DJ taught me how to oil the chain on the Sterling White, how to calibrate and clean spark plugs to extend their life and to save money, the importance of regularly changing the oil and greasing front ends of vehicles, to drive around bumps on the road to reduce repairs and how to do so many things. I had fun getting the trucks ready for the parades on the 4th of July, waxing the frames and applying tire black to make them shine. Always under the watchful eye and subject to DJ’s careful discipline and inspections!
As many years past, there were many conversations with both DJ & TC at the kitchen table about life and what my interests were – they were both very interested and interesting. I heard many stories about DJ’s brothers, and there were years of sitting out by the garage with Fred chatting. They were both very interested to hear about our weekend activities during college days. I recall DJ’s decision to change from Bud to Coors Light, it was at least an hour-long discussion about why it was better for you, the ingredients, how it was made, etc. I recall fondly the many pieces of worldly advice obtained out by the garage, receiving “one-cheek up” advice and sharing laughs! It seemed all you needed to be friends with DJ was your word, a warm heart, a handshake and to try as hard as you could while not giving up.
DJ & TC are another set of parents for me that talked about family, honor, respect, hard work, dignity, and the importance of keeping your word. I cannot separate the two of them in my life - they are as one. When I became a CPA, I went to see DJ & TC to tell them in person at the kitchen table, they were very proud and happy to see me grow up into a young businessman. When he became ill and forgetful, he remained polite as ever and smiled as he called me Itch Dog when I was able to see him. I’m sure it was tough on everyone. Forever in my heart and mind DJ, TC and the entire family will be with me always – particularly Kate, who in my heart is my sister.
With all my love,
Itch Dog
