Obituary of Donald McNutt

Donald J. McNutt, retired General Manager of Boston Sand & Gravel, passed away on Sunday morning, Sept. 27, 2015. The beloved husband of 62 years of Theresa C. (Wall) he was 84 years old. Don was born in Somerville. He was the son of the late Morton Abner & Kathleen McNutt. Don was raised and educated in Somerville and a graduate of Somerville High School Class of 1949. After High School Don enlisted in the United States Army and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. After leaving the Army he began his prestigious 48 year career at Boston Sand & Gravel. He started as a Mechanic and by the early 1960’s raised to the role of General Manager a role he held until his retirement in 2003. Don was a true leader at Boston Sand & Gravel. He was dedicated to his job and his Boston Sand & Gravel family. Don had a work ethic that you don’t see today working 6 days a week. Don saw something good in everyone. He was always the first one to give someone who was down on their luck an opportunity for a job. He was a friend and mentor for his employees and always there to give a word of advice. He empowered a team effort by all those who worked at Boston Sand & Gravel. Don was well respected by his peers in the industry as well as the vendors that he worked with. Don’s was also a true family man. He had great love of his wife and his family. Don and Theresa enjoyed traveling together whether it was as skiing as a family in New Hampshire. They also had their annual February vacations to Jamaica which they took pleasure in for many years. He was proud to see his grandchildren grow into adulthood. He was blessed to see the “third generation” of McNutt’s with the birth of 4 great grandchildren and one on the way! Don was a true role model for both his family and those whose lives he touched. He was a man that did not judge and accepted you for who and what you were. He was a humble man. He did so much for so many people and kept what he did to himself. Don had a generous and giving spirit. If you benefited from knowing Don, then you benefited from what he did for you. Don was the beloved husband of 62 years of Theresa C. (Wall). He was the loving father of Amelia C. McNutt & her companion Rosanne of Plymouth, Kate McNutt & her husband David Ierardi of Dunstable and the late Donald A McNutt & his wife Sandra McNutt of Burlington. Brother of Fred of Stoneham and the late Mary Simpson, Ruth Fitzgerald and Jack, William, Morton O., P. Harvey & Charles McNutt. Proud grandfather of Tracey Lavelle, Brandon McNutt and Daniel “Dano”, Alec, Michael & Theresa “Tess” Ierardi. Great grandfather of Delaney, Emerson, Charlotte, & Rory Donald. Funeral Services will be held at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 6 Lexington St., Burlington on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2:00 PM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials in Donald’s name may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, MA Chapter, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
